The entire Khumbu valley is considered sacred and there are many caves and huts in which great monks and gurus secluded themselves for meditation. Most villages have their own temple, which is supported by local residents. Monks are always invited to all important events.
The spread of Buddhism in the valley is associated with the name of Lama Sanga Dorje. He founded the oldest monastery in the valley - Pangboche. A lama died in Tibet, not far from Rongfu, turning into a rainbow. Everything that was left of him (eyes, tongue and heart) was for a long time kept in a silver vessel in a monastery in Tibet. Later, the vessel was stolen by the Sherpas, who had drunk the guards of the monastery. Perhaps this vessel is still in the Pangboche Monastery.
But before settling in Pangboche, Lama Sanga Dorje spent a lot of time in solitude in other places of the valley.
According to legend, when the lama flew to Khumbu valley from Tibet, he built himself a meditation hut near the village of Dingboche, on the slope of the sacred mountain Nakarjung Ri, where according to legend, the goddess of prosperity Dolma lives. The hut is located at an altitude of about 4800m. This is the oldest hut in Khumbu and one of the highest in the world.
When the Lama meditated in this hut, his enemies found out about it and came to the slopes of the mountain to kill him. But the llama turned his two dogs into a leopard and a tiger, which ate the killers.
The hut is located in a picturesque place with magnificent views of the valley of the Imja Khola River, Ama Dablam, Makalu and other peaks. Here and today you can meet the meditating monks. The monks from Tengboche Monastery live in this place for several months, spending time in constant prayers and meditations.
A small spring, which is located near the hut, is considered sacred and healing from diseases.
