Myths and legends >> Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar was founded at the very beginning of the developing of the Khumbu Valley by Sherpas. Due to its convenient location (on the most important trade route from Tibet to Nepal), it has become the most important trading center of the valley. Until now, people from all the surrounding valleys gather at the fair every Saturday in Namche Bazar. But, of course, they come here not only to buy or sell something, but also to chat with friends and relatives, have fun, relax. Finding a place to spend time here is not difficult. In the town there are many cafes and restaurants for almost every taste.

In Namche Bazaar, a house has been preserved, which is considered the oldest Sherpa house - it is more than 150 years old. Here you can see the traditional home way of life of these people. Also not far from the observation point, which offers a magnificent view of the Ama Dablam range, the Sherpa Culture Museum is located. At the entrance to the museum is a statue of Tenzing Norway (the first Sherpa who ascended the summit of Everest).

Namche Bazaar is located near Mount Khumbilia, on which, according to legend, the divine godness of the Khumbu Valley lives. Climbing this mountain is prohibited.

The neighboring village Khumjung is known for its monastery, in you can see the scalp of the Yeti. Not far from the monastery is a cave in which Padmasabhava (Guru Rimpoche) himself meditated hundreds of years ago. The manuscripts found here say that the great Guru considered the Khumbu valley sacred.
