Darapori is a small village in the Himalayas, on the banks of the Karnali River. It is the northernmost point in the Humla region where rice can be grown. The locals believe that rice was brought to this region by two large fish that came from the Ganges.
These fish decided to travel to the very sources of the sacred Ganges, up to the sacred Mount Kailash. They took a small supply of rice with them and headed upstream. All night they swam higher and higher into the mountains, until dawn began. With the first rays of the sun, the fish turned into two huge stones along the banks of the main tributary of the Ganges - the Karnali River. And the rice brought by the fish grew on the shore.
Of course, if the fish had time to climb upstream, then rice fields would be growing even further to the north of Darapori. But the inhabitants of the more northern villages were not lucky and rice does not grow there.
In the place where the fish turned into stones, today there is a small temple. And every year, the locals make a festival, during which they offer part of the first harvest to fish.
