Kachenjunga or Makalu?
It's time to start thinking about treks for next year. I have a desire to go to Nepal in the spring: blooming rhododendrons, alpine meadows, spring Nepalese fruits and all that ... Since blooming rhododendrons are a good reason to go in the spring, you obviously need to choose the route where they are and where they are blooming.
I'm choosing between two routes - to the Makalu base camp (with visit of the first camp) and to the Kachenjunga base camp.
Both routes are not much visited by tourists, both peaks are very beautiful, in both cases noticeable physical efforts is assumed.
Help me to choose!
Makalu: The route is smaller, but also less impregnated with variety. Maximum altitude - 4900m, in the Makalu base camp. About advantages - a view of 3 eight-thousanders: Makalu, Everest and Kachenjunga. However, for view of the last two you need to climb a little higher. Rhododendrons are supposed to be on the way. A fairly standard variety of granite rocks, waterfalls and glaciers for the Everest region. Several long walking days are expected, but the route suggests moving at a steady pace.
Kachenjunga: More long route, the highest point - 5100m, with the possibility to climb up to 6000m. Many long walking days, the trek will be noticeably harder physically. A special conservation area, which makes it possible to really see some rare animals (in these parts you can meet a red panda, a Himalayan bear and yeti), 30 species of rhododendrons, 250 species of orchids and a many other things. Nights in tents, many long (8 hours or more) walking days, noticeable physical efforts.
So: advise me - which of the routes you would choose?
